● 선자장이란?
선자장은 우리 전통 부채를 만드는 장인입니다. 과거 우리 조상들에게 부채는 단순히 더위를 식히는 도구를 넘어, 예를 갖추고 풍류를 즐기는 도구이자 신분을 상징하는 물건이기도 했습니다.

대나무를 쪼개고 깎으며 다듬는 과정을 수백 번 반복해야
합죽선 한 자루가 완성됩니다.
합죽선 제작은 크게 2부 6방으로 나뉘어 협업으로 제작되는데
현재는 거의 모든 과정을 혼자 해내게 됩니다.

어릴 적부터 아버지가 부채 만드는 걸 보았지만,
그에게 부채는 마냥 가까운 존재는 아니었습니다.
젊은 시절에는 건설 현장에서 일하고, 생선가게를 10년 넘게 운영하기도 했습니다.
아버지가 보유자로 인정되면서 고민에 빠졌습니다.
“내가 이 일을 이어서 하지 않으면 사라지겠구나.”
그렇게 부채를 잡기 시작했습니다.
“부채를 배워보니 가장 힘든 건 ‘변치 않는 것’인 것 같아요. ”
일은 쉽지 않았습니다.
아버지의 기준과 필요한 섬세함은 높았고, 시장성은 낮았습니다.
그럼에도 묵묵히 함께 대나무를 구하러 다니고, 잔업을 도우며 하나하나 배워 나갔습니다.
일을 시작한 지 어언 20년, 아버지의 기술과 묵묵함을 배우고,
다양하고 새로운 시도도 하며 꾸준히 작업 중입니다.
여성 최초의 선자장 이수자이자 아내인 장현정 이수자와 함께 합죽선을 이어 나가고 있습니다.
17살 무렵 장재마을에서 시작해,
지금은 아들이자 이수자인 윤성호와 함께
전주에서 작업하고 있습니다.
70년 경력의 손끝에서,
오늘도 새로운 지우산의 시간이 펼쳐집니다.
