● 소목장이란?
소목장은 건물의 창호, 목기, 목가구 등을 제작하는 장인입니다. 왕실 목가구뿐만 아니라, 민간에 널리 보급되어 지역적 특성이 뚜렷하게 나타납니다. 못이나 나사를 사용하지 않고, 나무를 끼워 맞추는 결구(짜맞춤) 기법이 특성입니다.

500년 이상 묵은 질 좋은 고사목의 무늬만을 골라 사용해 제작합니다.
이때 이 무늬는 나무가 자라는 과정에서 병해 등으로 인해 생기는 ‘용목’입니다.
일종의 상처와 맞서 싸운 나무의 흔적입니다.
다른 지역과 달리 쇠목, 동자목 등을 조립할 때
굴곡이 없는 게 특징인데 이를 민장농이라고 합니다.
특이한 점은 앞면 화장판 제작 방식인데,
사이에 한지를 배접해 계절에 따른 온·습도 변화에 따른 변형을 막습니다.
이 기술은 소병진 보유자의 특허 기술이기도 합니다.
또, 전주장은 옻칠이 아닌 동백기름칠을 합니다.
동백기름 유칠은 친경적이고 나무의 결을 그대로 정직하게 보여줍니다.

대한민국 최연소 가구 명장이자 소목장, 전주장 복원 등 그에게 붙은 이름은 많습니다.
“최고의 기술을 배워야겠다.”, “전주장을 복원하고 관련 기록을 남겨야겠다.”,
“무형유산 보유자가 되어야겠다.” 등 항상 꿈과 목표를 정하고 이루며 살았습니다.
성장의 과정이 쉽지는 않지만 그는 항상 말합니다.
“안 할 이유는 전혀 없잖아요. 하면 되는 거예요.
하다 보면 언젠가는 된다고 생각해요.
지금까지 그래왔고 앞으로도 그럴 거라고 믿어요.”
“전주장을 처음 봤을 때 이게 바로 내 농이다 싶었어요.”
전주장을 복원하면서 새로운 기술을 도입했습니다.
보통 100~200년 전쯤 만들어 문이 다 터져있고,
사계절 특성상 습기 조절이 어려워 이를 해결할 수 있는 방법을 연구했죠.
오랜 고민 끝에 나무를 접목할 때 사이에 한지를 넣는 방법을 고안했습니다.
한지의 닥나무 섬유가 질겨 나무를 딱 잡아주게 되었습니다.
이제는 전주장 관련 기록과 자료를 모아서 전시하고 교육하는
박물관을 만들겠다는 꿈을 가지고 계속해서 나무를 만지고 있습니다.
17살 무렵 장재마을에서 시작해,
지금은 아들이자 이수자인 윤성호와 함께
전주에서 작업하고 있습니다.
70년 경력의 손끝에서,
오늘도 새로운 지우산의 시간이 펼쳐집니다.
